A Lesson in Christian Magic
I said to the teacher, “I’m aware of Christ’s command
that we love one another, that we lend a helping hand;
but I’m not sure I’m ready; I might need some more knowledge
before I feel qualified to help someone who’s challenged.
Perhaps if I wait just a little while longer,
someone else will take over—-someone who is stronger.
I might give bad advice to one on tragedy’s brink;
if I row someone’s boat, we could both start to sink!
I could lose all control if I take such a chance
as my brother’s keeper—-so much hangs in the balance!
My time is so precious. I’m involved in my labors.
Who’s got time to hold hands with my God-fathered neighbors?
Maybe I’m too old—-or not quite old enough.
Of what good are my hands when the going gets rough?
The teacher’s eyes fairly gleamed as he made his reply:
“When you help in Christ’s name, the hand is quicker than the I!”
